Prevailing prayer is mighty, fervent, and persuasive. It is designed to lift heavy, burdensome loads off your shoulders and place them at the Lord’s feet.

Each year Elkanah and his family made the journey to Shiloh to worship and sacrifice to the Lord. Most scholars agree that this was the time of the year when the Feast of Tabernacles was celebrated. Peninnah seized this moment annually to tease Hannah about her infertility—fully aware it signified the ultimate tragedy for a married woman in the Hebrew culture. The happiness of every Hebrew husband rested on a son’s birth to perpetuate his name and inherit his estate. Although Elkanah never scorned Hannah for her childlessness, it became a great indignity and deficiency in her own eyes. She desperately desired a son.

Barrenness led Hannah to the only One who could heal her—Almighty God. She learned how to pray by praying. This is exactly why Dick Eastman writes in the book No Easy Road: “To learn prayer men must pray. We learn prayer’s deepest depths in prayer, not from books. We reach prayer’s highest in prayer, not from sermons.”2 Hannah’s prayer for a son was not just any ordinary prayer. It embodied the type of prayer that warriors learn and become skilled at during tough times. It is prevailing prayer.

If you’re going to graduate from the school of prayer and enjoy the status of a kneeling warrior, you must know the dynamics of prevailing prayer. Learn it. Use it. Master it. Prevailing prayer is mighty, fervent, and persuasive. It is designed to lift heavy, burdensome loads off your shoulders and place them at the Lord’s feet. You will know when you’ve entered into this space and prevailed successfully before God because there are signs—unmistakable indicators—to alert you of your arrival.

PREVAILING PRAYER IS PERSONAL

Until you personally feel the need to cry out to God, you will not prove to be mighty, fervent, or persuasive in prayer. You must own the need. The need must be real to you. You must personally pursue an audience with God. He has all the answers to your dilemma. Turn to the Lord and let Him show Himself mighty on your behalf.

I saw firsthand the power of prevailing prayer. Eight years after my wife and I planted Christ Church, the congregation was still meeting in rental facilities. In fact, we held worship in six different rental facilities ranging from a hotel, restaurant, and a multipurpose room of a church to a catering hall during that time. Most of the moves occurred without any forewarning by the property owners. In one case we were told on a Friday morning that the owners of the catering hall we were renting had filed bankruptcy and we could not use their facility any longer. The pressure to find a meeting place by Sunday had to be met by nothing short of a miracle from God. We found one, but because the restaurant was so large with simultaneous parties during our worship time, we only met there for one month.
